Revolutionary 2 and 4 Axis Vertical Turning/Milling The latest addition to the Phoenix line is our revolutionary "KAM" Vertical Turning and Milling Machine. Available in 48" and 66" table sizes and 2 and 4 Axis configurations.
The spindle head indexes from vertical to horizontal and locks in a curvic coupling. Both turning and live spindle operations can be done on the face and sides of a part in a single setup.
Back to the top New Large Vertical Turning and Milling Machines Phoenix's large vertical turning and milling machines offer an advanced, ultra-rigid design as well as all the cost and performance advantages of fully computer-engineered standard components. These machines are designed and built in the United States from the highest-quality components and are priced well below the cost of the leading competitors' products. This combination of benefits makes them the best value on the machine tool market today.
Phoenix machines provide solutions in industries such as power generation, aerospace, heavy construction and mining. These machines are capable of manufacturing parts up to 250 inches in diameter. Phoenix machine designs utilize advanced computer modeling tools to optimize performance and reduce both the number of machine components as well as engineering and manufacturing time. The use of computer modeling can also reduce overall machine costs by as much as 25%.
While the overall design of these machines provides a platform for machine stability and manufacturing productivity, Phoenix custom-builds each machine to meet the unique requirements of the parts being manufactured.

Back to the top Custom Milling Machines "SlanTmill" modular bridge-style mills were developed by Phoenix in 1993 to meet the specific needs of a manufacturer of power generation equipment. Over the past six years, the original design has been modified and expanded to meet the requirements of other customers as well. Current state-of-the-art engineering software such as solid modeling and finite element analysis has allowed this product to evolve into a true modular machine design. The slant bridge design can be equipped with various headstocks and table configurations specifically tailored to the application requirements.
Available SlanTmill modules include:
TABLES
- Standard rotary tables up to 120 inch diameter
- "W" axis rotary tables up to 120 inch diameter
- Pallets up to 70 inches
- Vertical rotary tables
- Rectangular tables up to 32 feet long with linear movement through
the bridge
HEADSTOCKS
- Heavy-duty fifty horsepower tilt spindle with +90° to 130° range of
motion
- Heavy-duty vertical milling and drilling - one, two and four spindles
- Heavy-duty horizontal spindle
- Twelve-inch square ram with indexing and attachments such as tilt
spindles, 90 degree and universal
- High-speed liquid-cooled spindles
If you have applications that require bridge-style milling machines, contact Phoenix to discuss the configuration that best meets your specific requirements. Back to the top Turbine Blade/Airfoil Mills In 1993, Phoenix designed a four-spindle, five-axis airfoil mill for a major aerospace subcontractor. As a result of that request, we developed a machine based on the same slant bridge design as the "SlanTmill." This machine remains the turbine blade industry's most cost-effective airfoil milling machine.
Features of the Phoenix blade mill include:
- Rigid cast and fabricated components
- Heavy-duty trunnion style tilt spindles
- Hardened and ground geared spindles
- Large-scale replaceable box ways
- Tool changer (4-position simultaneous)
- High-pressure coolant through the spindle
- One-, two- and four-spindle versions
- Integral chip conveyor system
- 3000 and 8000 RPM spindle speeds

Back to the top Creep Feed Grinding Development and manufacture of our creep feed grinding machines began with the remanufacture of various Blohm and Elb models that were being used in the turbine blade industry. As is often the case, the cost of new equipment was seen as being prohibitively expensive, so Phoenix was asked to design and build machines specific to our customer’s application. The result was the development of our profit grind single and twin wheel grinders. In the past four years, Phoenix has produced five of these specialty machines and has re-engineered and remanufactured numerous other creep feed grinders.
Back to the top Specialty Equipment Vertical Grinding Because
of our experience in remanufacturing Frauenthal, Campbell and Springfield
vertical grinders, and based on our vertical turning experience, we have
been asked by a manufacturer of large bearings to manufacture vertical
grinders based on our vertical turning equipment base and columns. We
would expect the first of these to be delivered in 2000.
If you have a requirement for a CNC grinder, CNC vertical grinder, creep feed grinder or other specialty equipment, contact Phoenix for more information. Back to the top
